Travel to Tulum
Our apartments are both situated in Tulum, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. This area is very accessible, with many direct flights from all over the Americas and Europe.
✈️ By Air
Since the beginning of 2024, are there two logical options to fly to Quintana Roo to reach Tulum? The biggest options are Cancun International Airport and, more recently, the newly developed Tulum International Airport.
Cancun International Airport (CUN)
Cancun airport has direct flights from all over the Americas and Europe. It takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to drive to Tulum. All the major car rental companies are there. The Maya train is already stopping at Cancun Airport but is not going all the way to Tulum at this moment.
Tulum International Airport (TQO)
Tulum airport is relatively small but modern. It is about 30 to 40 minutes' drive from Tulum. The usual car rental companies can be found there. Also, the Maya train stops close to the airport.
Flight connections (updated Q2 2024):
- US: Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dalles, Houston, Miami, LA & NY
- Canada: Montreal, Toronto
- Mexico: Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey
- Panama: Panama City
- Germany: Frankfurt (December 2024)
🚗 By Car
We recommend renting a car, although it's not absolutely necessary. Driving and navigating around Quintana Roo is very doable as it's not as busy and chaotic as the big cities.
Cars can be rented easily at both international airports. We recommend the more well-known brands, such as Avis or Hertz, as they have locations in Tulum itself in case you need support.
To get to Tulum, you take Highway 307 from either airport. It will literally go through Tulum, making it impossible to go wrong.
Hertz Mexico: We have good experience with Hertz, but it's good to know that it's a Mexican company operating with a Hertz License. They will respect your Hertz status, but you will not receive points, for example.
🚂 By Train
The train is not going all the way to Tulum (airport) yet, but it will be soon(ish). The trains are brand new, super modern, and comfortable. Do buy your tickets (through the official website) ahead of arrival, as the train is often fully booked.

🚌 By Bus
The cheapest option by far, and still very doable and comfortable, is to come to Tulum by bus. The ADO buses are comfortable touring cars with good schedules. However, they stop in the centre of Tulum, so you must take a taxi from there to your accommodation.

🚕 By Taxi
Probably the most comfortable method of reaching your accommodation in Tulum if you don't want to rent a car is by taxi. Needless to say, this is also the most expensive option. But depending on your budget, if you reserve it ahead of arrival and departure, it is still an option. Do book it ahead, as Cancun Airport is especially chaotic, and if you take a taxi without booking it ahead, you will pay a much higher price.
